Like the genius loci, guardian spirits in ancient Rome, these protective figures keep watch. They keep watch at night, while we sleep. They surround, shelter, and frame interior landscapes through circular gestures or mirrored compositions. In Lou Benesch’s works, the space to protect is metaphorical. It may be a dwelling, but also a symbolic citadel, an inner resource, or a secret.
